Product Information
Aramid Fiber Packing
Aramid packing is braided or pressed from aromatic polyamide fibers, including high-performance fibers such as DuPont™ Kevlar®. It offers high strength, high modulus, heat resistance and chemical resistance.
Material Properties
High-strength, high-modulus fibers support high shaft speeds and pressure differentials. The source describes strength three times that of metal wire and weight five times lighter.
Low thermal expansion supports dimensional stability at elevated temperatures.
PTFE or graphite additions provide self-lubrication in some grades.
Resistance includes organic solvents, weak acids, weak alkalis and fuel oil; strong acids and oxidizing agents reduce performance.
Technical Data
Temperature: -100°C to +280°C; briefly up to 300°C.
Pressure: Rotary pumps 25 bar; reciprocating pumps 100 bar; static seals 200 bar.
Shaft speed: Rotary pumps 25 m/s; reciprocating pumps 2 m/s.
Chemical range: pH 2–13.
Density: 1.3–1.4 g/cm³.
Applications
Stuffing-box seals in pumps, compressors and reactors, especially dynamic seals handling hot steam, hot oil and chemical media.
Low friction reduces shaft wear in abrasive-fluid equipment.
Industries include chemical processing, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, paper and power generation.
Types
Yellow aramid, golden aramid and aramid-interwoven black or white packing.
Heat resistance, oxidation resistance, strength and wear resistance vary with structure and application.
The source presents aramid packing as an asbestos alternative.
