Product Information
Graphite Packing
Graphite packing is braided from reinforced graphite yarn for dynamic and static sealing under high temperatures, high pressures and corrosive service.
Materials and Construction
Expanded graphite is reinforced with stainless steel wire, carbon fiber, glass fiber or other materials and braided or molded.
Some constructions combine graphite yarn with copper or nickel wire for strength. The source describes nickel-based versions reinforced with Inconel wire and an outer metal jacket to resist oxidation.
Performance
Temperature: Standard grades are listed at -100°C to +280°C; reinforced grades at -250°C to +850°C.
Pressure: Usually 8–25 MPa; special constructions, including nickel-based packing, are listed up to 50 MPa.
Chemical stability: The source gives pH 0–14 and resistance to acids, alkalis and solvents, citing boric acid and dichloromethane.
Graphite provides self-lubrication to reduce friction and extend seal life.
The source reports approximately 40% less wear than conventional packing in abrasive media containing solid particles.
Applications
Petrochemical valves, power-station steam piping and reactor agitator shafts.
Food and pharmaceuticals, marine propeller seals and cryogenic liquid storage and transfer.
Media include hot water, steam, liquefied gas, industrial wastewater, weak acids and salt solutions.

Installation and Maintenance
Clean mating surfaces and exclude contaminants. Avoid overtightening that could damage the packing structure. Inspect and replace periodically.
